Last date to link Aadhaar with PAN extended to next year
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date for linking Aadhaar card with PAN. The CBDT made an official announcement on Saturday that it has made a decision yet again to extend the date for linking Aadhaar with PAN card. The move is taken to benefit the taxpayerers across the nation. The CBDY made it compulsory for everyone to link their PAN cards with Aadhaars from July 1 last year.
The 12 digit biometric number has become mandatory to be linked with Permanent Account Number provided to the citizens for paying
their income tax returns. According to the new rule, people of India, provided with their PAN numbers would not be able to file income tax returns. The official statement from CBDT reads –“ Every person who has been allotted PAN as on
July 1,2017, and who, in accordance of the provisions of sub section (2) of section 139AA is required to intimate his Aadhaar number to the Principal Director-General of Income Tax (Systems) or the person authorised by the said authority”.
Reasons for linking PAN with Aadhaar
• Fewer problems in filling returns:
A lot of time and effort would be saved after the linking process. As of now, people without the linking have to make a check at the IT office and have to also show an IT slip as well. With the current move, this final step can be eliminated.
• Hassle of more than one PAN card
A lot of people bear more than 1 PAN card on their name. It is quite a hassle to keep records with so many PAN cards filled under a single name. It would save a lot of effort for the government officials to differentiate between the PAN cards
• A problem of tax invasion:
With so many PANs registered under a single citizen, it became easy for people to invade taxes. The move for linking PAN with Aadhaar make it easy to recognize any such frauds on part of the people.
Highlights of the Move
The move to link Aadhaar with PAN came just after the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed the finance bill for the year 2017-2018. He made it compulsory to use the 12 digits biometric number for filing income tax returns.
According to the analysis and the available data, 115 crore Aadhaar cards have been issued until now. A total of 24.6 criteria PAN cards are issued out which 2.07 crore have been seeded with Aadhaar.
The government has extended the date 5 times so far to benefit the taxpayers. The last deadline was June 30, 2018, which is extended to March 31, 2019
