Popular Businessman JRD Tata Was Born Today ( 29 July)
Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was born on 29 July 1904. Don’t get confused with Indian Steel King Jamsetji Tata. He was a relative of Tata family India. His Father Ratanji Tata was the first cousin of Jamsetji Tata, an industrialist in India. JRD Tata belongs to notable Tata family of India. JRD was born in the streets of Paris, France. His mother was a French lady married to an Indian businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. In the history of India, it is noted that JRD’s mother was the first Women in India to drive a car.
CAREER OF JRD TATA
JRD spent 31 years of his life in France and near regions. He completed his studies in France itself and was inspired by his friend’s father to be a pilot when he was on tour of his career. JRD was so passionate about his goal that he accomplished it by 1929. He became the first pilot licence issued in India. JRD was the first man to fly across the English Channel and took passengers to fly. As he was the First Indian License Issued Pilot, he came to be known as Father of Indian Civil Aviation.
INDIAN FIRST AIRLINE, TATA AIRLINES
JRD Tata founded India’s first commercial Airline, which was named as Tata Airlines in 1932. JRD’s dream was to set up Airlines in India at a bigger scale. But he knows that dealing with this project alone is not easy. So, JRD joined hands with Nevill Vintcent. They both managed to start up India’s national airlines, Tata Airlines in 1946 and took to the skies. Now, the airline is known as Air India as some shares are taken by the Indian government after JRD’s Death.
Finally, the first flight that lifted off in India from Karachi was controlled by JRD.
TATA GROUP OF COMPANIES
India’s biggest and successful industrialist didn’t satisfy with Airlines only. He started around fourteen enterprises under him having Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Titan Industries, Tata Salt and Air India in which his major interest was in steel, engineering, power, chemicals and hospitality. Also, JRD was famous for his business strategies. With his arrival in the Indian market. Finally, he gave a tough competition to other companies. Furthermore, he maintained high ethical standards, refusing to bribe a politician like Jawaharlal Nehru. Sources believe that the change in name of Tata Airlines to Air India created a huge chaos. At last, Tata Group of Companies was not happy with the decision and had fought against tooth and nail.
AWARDS AND HONOURS
Hence, JRD Tata received many awards during his time. He was honoured as a group captain by Indian Air force and Air Vice Marshal rank. Also, he received Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna for his comprehensive business strategies.
